How to stop being affected by otherpeople’s judgements of you

The first thing to understand is that if someone’s judgement of you is bothering you or affecting you, then you believe on some level that that judgement is true.

OUCH…Right!

Just take that in for a minute.

Now that you know you have that same judgement about yourself, we can get to work.

Awareness is key.

Let’s work with the judgement of selfish.

So, let’s say someone called you selfish and you didn’t like it.

Then chances are somewhere in your life you made the decision that being selfish was bad.

Either you judged selfishness as bad or you heard someone else judge selfish as bad and decided that you weren’t going to be selfish or you were called selfish at a young age and you didn’t like it, so you decided you wouldn’t be selfish.

How to stop being affected by other people’s judgements

The way to be ok with the judgement is probably not what you think.

Here are some exercises to do to stop being affected by other people’s judgements of you

Exercise 1
Embrace that part of you, the selfish part of you. You want to release all judgements about it and be ok with being it.

You want to let yourself know that you love that part of you.

Since we’re using selfish as the example, you could say “I love being selfish. I love that I’m so selfish. I love the selfish part of me”.

Now, you probably won’t believe it at first and will feel very silly saying those things, but eventually the charge around the judgement will subside.

If that exercise is a total no go and you can’t even get there or see yourself doing it, there is another process you can do to stop being affected by other people’s judgements of you.

Exercise 2

Step 1
You want to be in a quiet place. Close your eyes. Take a few deep breaths and meet that part of you. The selfish part of you and ask it when it first appeared. And go with whatever comes up.

Step 2
Ask it how it has been a blessing in your life. And listen without talking back. It’ll let you know how it has been a blessing. For example, burying that part of you  gave you the space to develop some other very beneficial attributes and characteristics.

Step 3
Ask it what you need to do to show it that it is fully loved and supported. And again listen. Thank it for being there and allow it into your heart.

These aren’t once-and-done processes. You will have to do them more than once.

The key is to fully love and embrace this part of you. Once you do that, there won’t be any resistance to it and it won’t be a judgement that has a charge to it.
