The Secret Power of Being Selfish

When was the last time you unapologetically put yourself first? For many of us, the idea of prioritizing ourselves feels selfish, indulgent, or downright wrong. We’ve been taught to give, compromise, and sacrifice, often to the point of exhaustion.

But here’s the truth: your one job is to honor yourself and embrace who you truly are. In fact, it’s not just okay to focus on yourself—it’s necessary. This is how you live a life aligned with your soul’s purpose, one filled with joy and true fulfillment.

Why Prioritizing Yourself Is Controversial

The notion of “making it all about you” is often frowned upon. Society tends to celebrate selflessness, leaving little room for self prioritization. But think about it: how can you pour into others when you haven’t poured into yourself?

Prioritizing yourself doesn’t mean neglecting others; it means showing up for them from a place of wholeness, rather than depletion.

If you feel resistance to the idea of focusing on yourself—thoughts like “I can’t do that” or “That’s selfish—those are clues about where healing is needed. Resistance often reveals the wounds we carry: feelings of unworthiness, fear of rejection, or the belief that our needs don’t matter.

Embrace these feelings instead of pushing them away. They’re guiding you toward deeper self discovery and love.

The Secret Power of Being Selfish

Selfishness vs. Authenticity

Being selfish is about giving yourself permission to truly be who you are, without apology.

The world doesn’t need another version of who you think you should be—it needs the authentic, radiant version of you that only you can bring. Your authenticity is your gift.

When you honor yourself, you inspire others to do the same.

Many of us spend years trying to meet external expectations, only to realize that no amount of external success or validation will fill the void. The solution isn’t outside of you; it’s within. It starts with self love, self acceptance, and self celebration.

Embracing What Comes Up

As you begin to prioritize yourself, everything that does not resonate with that will start to come up to be released. Emotions such as guilt, fear or sadness may surface. These aren’t signs that you’re doing something wrong; they’re evidence that you’re on the right path.

Blog Episode 82 dives deeper into this, but the key takeaway is to lean into those feelings with love and compassion, not resistance. What are they trying to show you?

Embrace what arises, even if it feels uncomfortable. Remember, growth often requires discomfort. Trust that by facing what’s coming up, you’re moving closer to the joy and fulfillment you seek.

Exercise: Begin Your Self Priority Journey

Take 10 minutes today to reflect on these questions:

What would it look like to put yourself first in one small way this week?
When you imagine prioritizing yourself, what feelings come up? Write them down without judgement.
What’s one thing you’ve always wanted to do for yourself but haven’t? Why not start now?

Choose one action from your reflection and commit to doing it this week. It doesn’t have to be grand—small steps lead to big changes.

In Closing

Making yourself a priority isn’t selfish; it’s essential. It’s how you align with your purpose, live authentically, and create a life of joy and fulfillment. The world needs the real, authentic you.

And the best part?  When you honor yourself, you inspire others to do the same. So go ahead—start putting yourself first. You deserve it.
