The first thing to know is that it’s very important that your self talk be in alignment with your goals. You don’t want to set a goal and then have your inner dialogue telling you how your goal is impossible to reach and you don’t have what it takes.

Embracing a growth mindset paves the way for continuous progress and development.

A person with a growth mindset views abilities, and talents as learnable and capable of improvement through effort.

Riding horses and horse showing are a constant learning journey, and setbacks are inevitable.

Cultivating a growth mindset allows you to see challenges as opportunities for growth rather than roadblocks.

So, what do you do when you hit a roadblock and your growth mindset goes out the window and your self talk isn’t supportive?

Step 1 Take a couple of deep breaths. That’ll give you some space.

Step 2 Observe the self talk without engaging with it. You know it’s there. You can hear it, but don’t talk to it.

Step 3 Feel the emotions that are coming up. This will be emotions that are coming up from the negative self talk. For example, the negative self talk could be, “I’m such a loser. I don't know why I keep making the same mistake over and over at every show. What is wrong with me?”

So you want to feel the emotions that the self talk elicits. For example, the emotions could be sadness, disappointment or frustration. Feel the emotions with no judgment.

Step 4 Find what is underneath the emotion. For example, what’s underneath the sadness? It could be feelings of unworthiness or not being good enough.

Once you know what’s underneath the emotions, that’s what you actually do the work on.

Once you do the work on, for example, feeling unworthy, and you get to a place where you know that you are worthy, next time you hit a roadblock, it’ll be a lot easier to stay in your growth mindset and have supportive self talk.

Two other elements of a winning mindset are Practicing Mindfulness and Visualization.

Riding and horse showing demand focus, precision, and split-second decision-making. Mindfulness and visualization techniques can greatly enhance your performance.

By practicing mindfulness, you can cultivate an awareness of the present moment, silencing distracting thoughts and sharpening your focus.

Visualization, on the other hand, involves mentally rehearsing your courses, creating a blueprint for success in the mind before executing it in reality. These techniques will help you develop confidence and awareness over your performance.

In Closing

Hopefully, this training on developing a winning mindset in equestrian sports helps you understand how important it is that your mindset supports you and empowers you and doesn’t degrade you.
